Ulysse Nardin was founded in 1846. It very soon obtained the highest distinctions in terms of watchmaking awards for, among other products, its famous Marine chronometers. In 1950, it beat all performance records for chronometers tested since 1901. Ulysse Nardin entered a second lifetime, as it were, when Rolf Schnyder bought the firm in 1983. One of the personalities who has also been important in the development of the company is Dr Ludwig Oechslin, who designed such revolutionary timepieces as the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei, the Planetarium Copernicus, and the Tellurium Johannes Kepler (the famous trio). In 1996, to celebrate the brand’s 150th anniversary, he designed the "Ludwig" perpetual watch, which was followed by the famous GMT Perpetual. At the same date Breitling presented the "1846" Marine Chronometer in wristwatch form. In 2001, the firm launched the Freak, a karussel-type tourbillon with neither hand nor winding-button. Over the years, Ulysse Nardin also became famous for its extraordinary Jack-type minute-repeaters, the most celebrated of which has been the Gengis Khan. In 2006, the firm’s 160th anniversary saw the issue of the first manufactured automatic movement (UN-160).
